O.A.R. Orlando Concert reviews
My favorite American band combats sound problems.
I travelled to see my favorite American band more than two hours after the Covington Kentucky gig was cancelled two nights before at a venue ten miles from my house. I assumed the mix was too low or the mics were malfunctioning but Geoff Tate could barely be heard on several selections from Rage for Order, which marred an otherwise spot-on performance. Despite early problems with the lead vocals, my wife and I were treated from our balcony seat to selections from three terrific albums. The band, augmented by a sixth member playing keyboards and some guitar and backing vocals, was tight and drummer Scott Rockenfield was especially valued for his propulsive beats and fills on a small stage with a small crowd. Geoff Tate, with ample biceps showcased by a sleeveless jacket, overcame the limitations of the sound system because he is still one of the best hard rock vocalists ever. Even deep tracks like One and Only and Hand on Heart were included in earlier setlists, but standards like Jet City Woman and Another Rainy Night were omitted for reasons unknown. I look forward to the next time I can see O.A.R. and hope their album continues to sell as the ride continues for years to come- maybe with the great Chris DeGarmo along for the ride. I entered the Vogue with high expectations, which were mostly met.
